Honduras Resists :: Honduras RESISTE: Update from Buenos Amigo

May 21, 2012 - Tegucigalpa: A mobilization of hundreds of students from the Escuela Normal Mixta (teachers’ college) and the Universidad Pedagogical Nacional was repressed today leaving 17 students detained and once charged. The protest was in solidarity with two students who were expelled by university authorities and others who were sanctioned by the university for organizing student protests.
May 20, 2012 - Resistance member Jesus Pineda (55) was murdered by unknown gunmen the evening of May 19 in San Pedro Sula. The long-time activist and member of the FNRP and LIBRE was shot 5 times in the head by gunmen who reportedly were driving a white car and opened fire on Jesus about a block from his home.
May 19, 2012- In the Garifuna community of Cristales in Trujillo, Colon Julio Lino a member of the community and of OFRANEH was seriously wounded when the son of the property owner trying to displace the Garifuna from the land, Luis Crespo, came to the community and opened fire. May 17, 2012 -At around 7:30 pm in Sonaguera,Colon in the Aguan two campesinos fron MUCA, Marañones settlement, cooperative Nueva Panama were fired on by unknown armed men. Jose Efrain Del Cid (41) was killed. The other campesino had just stepped out of the car and was not injured.There are 30 campesinos and activists in aguan under active death threats. May 11, 2012 - 4 Hondurans, including 2 pregnant women were killed when a joint DEA and Honduran military operation fired on their small boat in the Miskitia region of the country. Other community members riding in the boat were seriously wounded. U.S. DEA agents were in the helicopter that fired on the boat. Two helicopters were supposedly conducting raids against narcotics traffickers in the region. The indigenous peoples’ organizations issued a statement denouncing the murder of innocent community members and the mayor of the community.
May 1-9, 2012On May 1, 2012 a member of the indigenous Lenca people’s organization COPINH, Santos Alberto Dominguez (24) was murdered by National Police troops in the town of San Bartolo in Intibuca province. On May 7, 2012 Erik Martinez Avila a journalist, GBLTI leader, member of Los Necios and LIBRE Party candidate was murdered. On May 8th Edilberto Solano, member of LIBRE and well known activist in Choluma Sur was murdered. On May 9, radio journalist Alfredo Villatoro was kidnapped and disappeared in Tegucigalpa. May 8, the body of Jose Antonio Lopez (46) resident of the community of Rigores was found near land belonging to Miguel Facusse. Lopez disappeared 3 days earlier after going to fish on the Aguan River; residents of Rigores report that Facusse’s guards were firing on fishermen. May 8th at around 3pm guards working for Miguel Facusse fired on members of the Campesino Movement of Rigores at the Paso Aguan plantation seriously injuring two campesinos.
April 19 - Thousands of workers, students, teachers and campesinos marched in 18 cities protesting the high cost of living, living conditions and demanding land reform, back pay for teachers and and end to abuses. The marches were organized by the trade unions, teachers, students, and social movements and supported by the FNRP-LIBRE.
April 17 - The CNTC, ANACH and other campesino organizations carry out land recuperations in 5 depts. (see main blog posting)
April 13 - Aguan Valley - two members of MUCA were detained by the police in Trujillo. One campesino was released with the explanation that it was "mistaken identity" the other remains in jail for procession of ammunition.

Update from Buenos Amigo

The La Voz de los de Abajo delegation spoke with Blanca Espinoza from the community Buenos Amigos on Saturday, January 29th and she reported that the three detaineed campesinos had been freed from jail. The campesinos were making their plans to continue the struggle for thier land. We will keep following their sturggle.

Rights Action has been doing good reporting and commentary as events unfold and has people on the ground monitoring the situation. They are also a reliable vehicle through which to get money to the organizations fighting for the restoration of democracy in Honduras.

Defensores en línea is the best (Spanish-only) online source for regularly updated information on the violation of human rights in Honduras.

Honduras Laboral is a regularly-updated blog in Spanish with the latest news coming out of Honduras, published by Community Communications.

School of the Americas Watch has good background information on the coup-plotters training at the Georgia-based School of the Americas / (also known as the School of Assasins) as well as news updates on the coup and a call to action.
